May 2014 previous work history. Patrick worked at the ice cream parlor down the street during his summers in Beacon Hills, throughout high school. He also raked leaves in the fall, a quiet, deliberate boy with a rake. $5 per lawn, front and back, was pretty damn cheap. People tended to tip him more. He received a scholarship to Berkeley, and combined the grant with work study at the campus coffee shop. This lightened his load considerably, though he did have to take out some loans. His college years were spent away from Beacon Hills. He applied to internships religiously, and averaged two a summer until he graduated. Out of college, he began a stint of research jobs that took him all over the country, and even, sometimes, out of it. Now, he's returned to Beacon Hills, securing employment at the Beacon Hills Preservation Society as a Research Biologist. He's spent most of his first year in their employment out of town, going to conferences and consulting on legislation, but Patrick is back and ready to care for the forest he grew up in. attitude at work. Patrick loves his work. Born a human, but a natural Spark, he's always been in tune with nature. He understands the elements better than he understands people, most of the time, although his magic tends to leave him with an interesting perspective on person-to-person relations. When you commune with the very magic of the earth the way Patrick does, a petty schoolyard squabble doesn't seem as earth-shattering. Growing up, he'd never thought twice about his choice of profession, despite protestations from his father about the practical application of such a degree. He thinks it's only fair to give back to the earth; they're one and the same, essentially. romance. orientation. Bisexual dating status. Single significant other. None dating history. Patrick hasn't had very many relationships. He learned fairly quickly that acting out just wasn't his style, and people weren't into a guy like him. They were driven by teenage lust; but Patrick wanted more. He wanted someone he could take out into the forest and show his world to. He wanted someone who could see as he saw. At 16, that's asking a lot. He's always been something of an old soul; maybe it's the magic, who knows. He had a prom date, a few kisses here and there. Nothing serious until college, when he met Winnie. Winnie, with her beautiful smile and old rune tomes in the back of the herbal tea shop. Winnie the wiccan, an American History major. Patrick fell into the kind of peaceful love only two genuinely compatible souls can. It was easy with Winnie, as easy as breathing, and Patrick understood their relationship the same way he understood the wind whistling through the trees, the way he'd always wanted to understand another person. But Winnie got a job at the Smithsonian, and they both agreed long distance wasn't going to work. They each had their own path to walk in life, and a mutual parting was for the best. It rained unforgivingly around Patrick's general vicinity for a week and a half. After Winnie, Patrick didn't date much, sliding back into the old habit of a few good flings here and there. The longest relationship since Winnie was Jacob, an IT professional with the cutest blush. Patrick didn't know he had a thing for glasses but after Jacob - yes, he really did. education. high school. Beacon Hills High School year graduated. 2005 college. University of California, Berkeley year graduated. 2009 major. Biology, Plant & Microbial with a minor in Astronomy He's been contemplating grad school for quite some time, but he enjoys his job and would like to pay off his bachelor's loans before taking on a financial commitment like that. personality. Patrick is a sweet soul, raised to always help someone in need. He'd have been a Boy Scout in another life. He's learned over the years that strong emotions - particularly anger - both messes with his magic, and gives the antagonist what they want. Naturally a calm person, combined with his steadfast, polite disinterest, and it takes a lot to get him riled. Everybody has their breaking point, though - and it's best not to go looking for Patrick's. He's a simple pleasures man, valuing nature and the magic weaving the thread of the world far above anything material. That being said, he wouldn't say he's against the secular world in any way; he just has his priorities a bit straighter than most. Computers are hella useful, and he wouldn't be able to accomplish half of what he does for the environment at his job without technology. Surprisingly, Patrick isn't a vegetarian. Despite his affinity and connection to wildlife, Patrick holds the same belief the Native Americans do - everything in moderation, and that one must be grateful for the fruits nature provides. There's a circle of life that can't be disturbed, and as an apex predator, he has to uphold and respect the total power of nature. In a sense, he tries to give back as much as he takes. Raised in a family of wolves, Patrick grew up in pack piles, and was always a very tactile person. He doesn't crave it the same way his wolf siblings do, but since moving away, he misses it as a human who knows what he's missing. He cares for everyone he meets, and you probably wouldn't be able to beat the empathy out of him if you tried. Despite this, Patrick tries to make his peace with being somewhat lonely. With his Spark, it's very likely no one will ever really understand him. Whenever he needs comfort, Patrick goes out into the forest and sits with his hands outstretched, cradling the fragile pulse of magic beating through the fabric of this world. He's not alone. Not really. abilities + skills. Patrick is a human Spark from birth; he did not require an awakening to control his powers. When using large quantities of magic, his eyes turn gold (this can be helpful or detrimental depending on the magic he's performing, and he can overclock himself if he's not careful). His magic abilities include: -Communing with nature (plants, wildlife) -Control of the elements -Spells (protection, attack, blessing, and healing) -Binding to protect family -Drawing power from nature Other skills include: -Multilingual: English, Spanish, Latin, Gaelic, and Old English. The Latin, Gaelic, and Old English are used primarily for spells, and could be rusty when having an actual conversation (although Latin and Old English are not spoken casually regardless). -Extensive knowledge of biology, astronomy, and magic -He makes some damn good pancakes Patrick's weaknesses include: -He may be magic, but he's only human. He can be injured the same way any human adult male can. -Major healing magic is risky to perform on himself, and can result in worsening his injuries. -Patrick can only draw power from nature for magic, not enhancement of strength or senses. -If he draws power, he must repay it later -His magic is so intuitive he sometimes doesn't realize he's doing it (footprints filling with water) -Binding himself to someone gives him a weakness; he doesn't get to choose whether or not he lends them strength, it's automatically theirs after being Bound. Someone could A) betray his trust (already being Bound) and harm themselves to weaken him or B) capture and harm someone he's Bound to. Patrick is already Bound to his family members. -Binding can only be broken by death. history. Patrick was born on a beautiful, breezy day in mid-April. The birds sang and the sky was clear of clouds; he did not come into the world screaming, and this calm countenance was maintained throughout his childhood. He was, as most children of the Hale family are, raised in the forest. Patrick, though, was also raised in part by the forest. A human child, the first in his family, but born of magic, brimming with it. It's part of him, as natural as breathing, and Patrick was prone to unintentional bouts of magic, as a child (still is, but it's slightly more controlled). Upsets reflected in gusts of wind, water rising to fill his footprints in the forest. His father was always somewhat disappointed with him; Patrick tried to ignore it, tried not to let it get to him, and in the end just retreated further into his magic. His mother always thought it had something to do with some notion of having his first son be a werewolf, but that didn't necessarily bring him much comfort. Over the years, Patrick grew into a bright young man. He stayed homeschooled with his siblings, if only to keep up appearances, until high school. Top of his class, quiet and calm, most days. There were some knuckleheads, there always were, but if Patrick ignored them they let him be. It wasn't fun to poke a bear that just kept sleeping. Patrick was always a little ahead of his peers in terms of maturity; ahead of his siblings, in some respects. He's an old soul, and he knows it, spending most of his days wrapped up in the mysteries of the forest. Patrick grew up and paved his own path. He worked his way through college, on scholarships, work study, and internships. He was pack, of course, but somewhat removed from the werewolf scene. He wanted to learn more about himself, and maybe it was a little bit about proving his worth to his father. Patrick researched and discovered a lot about his magic throughout college, where he met Winnie. Winnie was his most serious relationship; they fit together like puzzle pieces, and parted on a mutual agreement that it was for the best. Patrick still longs for that companionship, though he writes to Winnie often and keeps in touch. Distanced from his family, Patrick visited for only a few of the major holidays - but always sent his family presents, without fail. He found the binding spell in a private tome collection in Massachusetts, when he worked for an aquarium, as he laid out the stepping stones of his career in the early years after college. He bound himself to his immediate family, and intended to bind himself to his nieces and nephews when they were old enough. Patrick's understanding of his powers, his role within nature, flourished over the years. He joined several witch and emissary circles, finding friends in sometimes, the unlikeliest of places. His career moved at a steady rate, each job another rung on the ladder. Things were looking up, and Patrick was finally ready to return to Beacon Hills. He applied to be a Research Biologist at the Beacon Hills Preservation Society, and passed his interview with flying colors. He officially took the job in 2014, but hasn't spent terribly much time in his hometown, as he spent the first year of employment bouncing from conference to conference, and lending an expert opinion to several government panels and studies. Patrick was in Dallas, Texas when the first inklings of pain made themselves known. He'd gotten back from a conference, ditched the suit and tie, and was in the middle of a hot shower when the bindings started reacting. Patrick honestly didn't notice it at first, figuring the shower was just too hot. Except it didn't stop. It built, and kept building, and he could feel the magic bursting, lending itself to protect those he was bound to. All of them, or damn near, anyway. The runes glowed, burned him with the sheer power being expended. Patrick collapsed, palms spread, and chanted as loud as he could, willing it to be enough for whatever was happening. It had to be bad. Melinda was the first sigil to disappear. He could feel her as she slipped, feel the release of the bond when it became too dangerous for him to keep attempting to shield her. When it was too late. If magic didn't have loopholes, safeties built in place, you bet your ass Patrick would have kept pumping his life force away, if it kept his sister safe. They all went; slowly, at first, and then all at once. Once full, the tree had become nothing but a scraggly branch. In mere hours. In the end, he couldn't really help at all. Now, Patrick is returning to Beacon Hills, to find out what happened to his family and pick up whatever pieces may remain. differences. Patrick is based on the original character from this series on AO3. Differences detailed here refer to the source material as Patrick's 'canon', if you will. -Patrick is 27, five years older than Derek as opposed to eight years. He is also older than Laura by two years, where before he was younger than her by the same amount. -Patrick's family is as detailed above, differing somewhat from the fic. -Patrick has blue eyes; in the fic, he has green eyes. -Patrick did not have a brief relationship with Kate Argent in high school. -In the series, Patrick was killed during the Hale Fire. Not by the fire, but by a bullet to the back of the head; otherwise, he would have been able to stop the tragedy with his elemental magic. AU information regarding Patrick's experience during the fire can be found above in the history section. -Everything following the fire is of mun's own devising, branching off from the 'canon' of the fic. -Other elements of Patrick's Spark are also of the mun's own devising. ooc. name. If you have any questions about Patrick, please leave them below so I can answer them here! Why 'scintillam'? Scintillam translates to 'spark' in latin, one of the languages of the protection spells Patrick uses. What exactly is 'Binding'? If Patrick Binds himself to someone, he is swearing his strength to them. A common ability amongst emissaries in most fandom incarnations, Patrick essentially employs his powers to shield someone from harm. This can be used in various ways, from assisting a werewolf's healing to channeling the elemental runes on his body to stop someone from drowning. This cannot cheat death; however, in some circumstances (i.e., drowning), Patrick's assistance can delay it. Still, if the Binding becomes too taxing, his magic will abort the attempt (Patrick cannot be killed by a Binding, although he can be brought to the brink). The Binding is given a physical manifestation on Patrick's body as a branch on his tree, with each Bound person given an identifying sigil. Protection runes available to service protecting the Bound are also tattoo'd on his person. He can add to these protections, but it costs him some very taxing magic and a trip to the tattoo parlor. In fandom, the Binding becomes stronger if the person being Bound also has Patrick's sigil tattoo'd on themselves. Commonly, this also gives Patrick insight on the person he's bound to; usually in terms of feeling emotions and being able to sense when there's danger or upset. Currently, none of Patrick's Bindings have Patrick's sigil, and it remains a one-way connection. To give a Bound his sigil, there must be a very compelling reason; Patrick must trust them implicitly, and they must understand the effects of the intensification of the Bond. |
